Cladonia stellaris

Cladonia stellaris. There are nineteenth century British specimens of this attractive lichen, but there is doubt as to the authenticity as British. It is an arctic species, and forms tighter plants than other members of Cladina. It is threatened by use as miniature trees in models by model railway enthusiasts and architects particularly. In the north, it can be fairly frequent often in woodland situations. This photograph was taken near Gjora in Norway.
