Cladonia ramulosa

Cladonia ramulosa. This is the brown fruited counterpart of the red fruited Cladonia diversa, and is equally variable. Typically, the podetia are covered in granules to a greater or lesser degree, and individuals may also have multiple podetia covered in squamules. With practice it is possible to identify the different forms, but care must be taken. Identifying infertile examples is particularly fraught, but luckily this species is usually fertile. This photograph was taken on Portelet Common in Jersey.
