Cladonia parasitica. This is another New Index of Ecological Continuity species. The podetia are squamule covered with many uniform sized squamules. Though it cannot be seen in this photograph, a diagnostic feature is the non corticate surface of the podetia between the squamules which can usually be seen with a handlens, and as in Cladonia caespiticia can look translucent. It occurs on dead wood, and often quite large rotting logs. It is a fairly frequent species in ancient woodland. This photograph was taken in Nottingham Forest.
