Cladonia mitis

Cladonia mitis. Finding this was one of my greater triumphs as a lichenologist. In the past, it was found in small quantity amongst shingle at Dungeness, its only English site where it was found by the late Peter James. However the site was destroyed when a gravel pit was dug. This photograph is of a plant in the extreme east of East Sussex, and a tiny piece was sent to Brian Coppins for TLC testingwho proved it to be C. mitis. All sites are on shingle close to the coast.
