Cladonia coccifera

Cladonia coccifera. This is the species in the strict sense. It is a montane species with regular cup shaped podetia covered in rather sparce, and flattened squamules. Cladonia diversa as well as being very variable has podetia covered, usually pretty densely with rounded granules or squamules. This example of the true C. coccifera was pointed out to me with other BLS members near Cape Race in Newfoundland by the great Finnish lichenologist Ted Ahti.
