Caloplaca granulosa

Caloplaca granulosa. A rather rare species which occurs on basic rock close to the sea, but may be at least a hundred feet above it. As its name suggests, it has a granular thallus. This example is slightly fertile, apothecia seen towards the bottom. It is being invaded top right by Caloplaca saxicola, which may even be being parasitic. This specimen growing on a wall at Portland is not very healthy and during the PSL visit in 2015 was only found in very small quantity. Much smaller than when seen previously in 2001. It should differ from the similar Caloplaca littorea in having marginal lobes, but these seem to be lost in this example. However, the colour is different as is the shape of the abundant isidia.
