Cladonia monomorpha

Cladonia monomorpha. I was present when this species was first found in the UK on heavy metal rich spoil on a mine site in Cumbria. It has now been found twice in the UK in similar habitats. The British material has more or less upright basal squamules, but otherwise resembles the photograph of it taken on open, dry heathland at Kootwijk in the Netherlands. The basal squamules are typically large, and the cups contain large squamule like structures.
