Brownsea Island lies within the Poole Harbour basin and covers approximately 203 hectares. 81 hectares of the Island on the northern side is managed as a nature reserve by the Dorset Wildlife Trust. It has a nice range of habitats from dry heath, acid grasland, to conifer and mixed woodlands with some mature trees. There are a number of ponds, two freshwater lakes, a small stream, and the important lagoon, one of the most significant nature conservation features in the whole of the region. There are soft cliffs, sandy and rocky intertidal habitats and a little saltmarsh. The Island has been quite well recorded by visiting naturalists, as well as the resident DWT wardens. This list is up to 2015.
