County Durham does it for me

A week's holiday based at Holwick, near Middleton-on-Tees gave me the opportunity to extend new species. Melancholy Thistle (Cirsium heterophyllum) was the first of many, seen locally. Down into Yorkshire where at Ballowfields LNR were lots of Spring Sandwort (Minuartia verna) and a small patch of Moonwort (Botrychium lunaria). A beautiful walk from Holwick through a hay-meadow to view two waterfalls along the Tees was excellent, and new to me were Pale Forget-me-not (Myosotis stolenfera), Alpine Bistort (Persicaria vivpara), Shrubby Cinquefoil (Potentilla fruticosa), Wood Cranesbill (Geranium sylvaticum) and Shade Horse-tail (Equisetum pratense). Orchids galore and other interesting plants in the area included Mountain Pansy, Leopardplant, Dusky Cranesbill. The Nature Trail at Cow Green Reservoir gave me Northern Bedstraw (Galium boreale) but I struggled with identifying Lady's Mantle and Eyebright species - still checking! Pity they don't label the speciality plants in the fenced enclosures. The last port of call was to Bishop Middleham Quarry where some years ago Bee-eaters nested. This was a good site for Dark Red Helleborine (Epipactis atrorubens) and also Northern Brown Argus butterflies. It was my first visit to this lovely Teesdale area and hopefully it won't be the last.

Alchemilla

Dave Gibbs and I did a Teesdale plants clean-up in July last year, thanks to a lot of good gen which Dave sussed out and with much help from the warden. Most of the rarer Alchemilla species are in meadows rather than out on Widdybank Fell (the nature trail by Cow Green Res), though we did see A. monticola by the road there amongst all the A. glabra. Brilliant area!
