24th April 2014 - Cornwall Round-up

Right, been back for a couple of days and all new species are tallied up and on the various lists. Seeing as Sam and I are packing the flat up next week I've left the Telferscope, entomological gear and books in Cornwall with Danny. So I won't be doing very much natural history stuff at all for the remainder of April. Additions to the list range from algae inside sea anemones through to Smooth Snake, Sea Daffodil through to Lesser Horseshoe Bat. Variety is the spice of life(rs)! Big hits included a session rockpooling combined with a couple of sessions sand sieving at low tide and a big day out around the Penzance area with Sally Luker, mainly looking at Sternorrhynchans (the swanky new unpronouncable name for aphids, scales, psyllids etc).

I added a grand total of 43 species to my Pan-species List. I was particularly pleased to finally catch up with Western Green Lizard, Smooth Snake, Sand Crocus and the Lesser Horseshoe Bat - all of which I've been meaning to see for some time. None disappointed, in fact I had especially fantastic encounters with all four! Species tried for but missed were few and far between, Greater Horseshoe Bat being one notable absentee from a known roost site. Dan is already making plans for a late summer bash, plus September is party time so I'm bound to be going back down for that!
