About me:
Born in 1968 I've been obsessed with nature since, well, forever really! First childhood memories are of being taken to a zoo at around 18 months old and watching tv programmes involving David Attenborough and Jacques Cousteau. I got my first pair of binoculars aged 13 and from then on spent every available moment outdoors and despite what my mother said I still haven't 'grown out of animals'! As my husband will verify I am even worse now!!! He is happy just to see stuff whereas I like ~ need even! ~ to put a name to them. My early days in the 80's were mostly birds but over the years I've started to broaden my horizons and look at a lot more stuff like butterflies, mammals, wild flowers, aquatic life etc. I'd like to learn a lot more about the UK's natural history in general though and become a much more well-rounded naturalist so am looking forward to taking part in pan listing in the months and years to come. The only thing I kind-of 'regret' is not starting a proper nature diary and keeping records in an organised fashion over the years rather than just jotting them down in my day-to-day diary...some of which have been lost. A lot of species (mostly birds and mammals) I can remember the exact date and place but, as I've got older, I've noticed the memory needs the odd prod now and then and I find myself looking things up more often as to the exact month or date. So rather than perhaps put down a species I'm not exactly sure about (or 100% positive on the ID) I'm going to start my pan listing for everything which is NOT a bird, mammal, reptile or amphibian from scratch as it were. I think it'll be a lot less 'stressful' than having to dig out various diaries for dates and species and getting all frustrated because a certain year is missing. The main thing is to keep it fun and, in the process, learn a lot more about the UK's wonderful natural world.
