Cladonia coniocraea

Cladonia coniocraea. At last, as promised here is the first Cladonia species. The late and great Dr Francis Rose used to say that the podetia looked like elephant's trunks; an idea I find helpful. The podetia are finely sorediate, and it is a common species on less basic trees such as oak, particularly the base or branches, on dead wood and earthy, or mossy banks in heathland. This photograph was taken in St Catherine's Wood, Jersey.
