Cladonia cariosa

Cladonia cariosa. This is similar to Cladonia ramulosa, but is distinguished by the slits in the podetia. The podetia are usually covered in squamules as in this photograph. Quite frequently, when this and Cladonia ramulosa are growing together, it can be separated by having darker apothecia. However, the critical feature is the fissured podetia. Not a common species, it occurs in rather open and disturbed ground. This photograph was taken in the grounds of the disued colliery at Snowdown in Kent.
