Cladonia callosa

Cladonia callosa. Shown here as it is most frequently found as rather fragile squamules on the surface of fairly dry peat in heathland. It does sometimes have podetia which are frequently branched, and if fertile the apothecia will be brown. It is rather local in the UK occurring in the northern part of the country. This photograph was taken in Gasteren in the Netherlands.
