Cladonia caespiticia

Cladonia caespiticia. This is an ancient woodland species and its presence in woodland is used to help calculate the New Index of Ecological Continuity. It has brown apothecia which are held onĀ  non corticate stalks which can appear translucent. Although usually on trees or dead wood, this example was found on sandrocks in the Eridge Rocks Reserve in East Sussex. It is a relatively common species.
